Overview of the Preliminary Teacher Training-Mentorship Program
The program contains:
- practice subjects in Asana and Pranayama
- theory subjects pertaining to Yoga (Theory-Philosophy
- theory subjects pertaining to the teaching process (Theory-Teaching)
- Yogasana subjects examine how the subject of Yoga exists within our practice.
The subject descriptions follow:
Asana
Asana subjects contain the study of the Asanas through technique, precision in performance and the use of props. The Asana syllabus is repeated yearly throughout the three years of the course so that learning is consolidated as the student’s practice and understanding deepen. A number of Asanas are included from outside the IYA Introductory syllabus. These Asanas are sequenced to clarify the learning experience and understanding of the syllabus.
Pranayama
Pranayama subjects offer a foundation for Pranayama practice in theory, while giving specific practices and measures for progress.
Theory
Theory has two aspects: Theory-teaching and Theory-philosophy.
Theory-teaching subjects deliver the foundation for communicating practice and the ‘state’ of Asana, while Theory-philosophy explores the subject of Yoga through the principles contained within the Yoga Sutras. A number of sessions are delivered both in the mid week theory sessions for the training group and to a general audience at Yoga Mandir lecture series.
Yogasana
Yogasana involves an examination of our practice through the distinguishing features of Iyengar yoga, namely the use of technique, timings, sequence and repetition.
The Preliminary Teacher Training-Mentorship Program is structured over 12 terms. There are 4 terms a year each with an attendance requirement of 7 days at Yoga Mandir in Canberra. Each term trainees have an assignment and reading schedule pertaining to Yoga philosophy, science and practice. The schedule provides guidance about the study load per term with the average workload being 5 hours per week across a 10-week term. An extensive range of digital media is provided to trainees to support their practice and course work.
Training can be undertaken as either full time or part time:
- Full time status flags the trainee has set the intention of enrolment: 4 terms per year x 3 years
- Part time status flags the trainee intention of enrolment term by term for however many years it takes to complete the course work
Trainees can also designate either internal or external status:
- Internal status means that assisting and observation of classes is allocated within the Yoga Mandir courses in during weeks 1 – 4 or 7 – 10
- External status means that assisting and observation of classes is allocated during the 7 day attendance period
