Specialist Programs

Yoga Mandir's Specialist Program supports students who are experiencing specific conditions that affect their ability to practice.  Students learn to adapt their practice of Yoga, so that participation within the Practitioner and Led practice programs becomes possible.

The Specialist Program includes:

1. Private assessments. Students can attend a Private assessment with a teacher of the Institue.  Private assessments are currently offered by Senior Teacher, Alan Goode, occasionally in conjuction with the student's usual teacher.  The Private assessment helps both the student and the teacher to become clear as to whether enrolment in one of Yoga Mandir's Practitioner programs or in the Remedial program is recommended.  Attendance at a Private Assessment is a pre-requisite for enrolment in the Remedial program.

2. Remedial program.  The Remedial program provides a context to learn specific modifications to asana technique and sequencing.  Students develop their knowledge of a targetted aspect of physiology or anatomy.  The knowledge then informs decisions about modifications and improved sequencing for a healthier and less painful practice of Yoga.

3. Specialist courses.  Specialist courses are attended through a weekend workshop format. It is possible for students to be enrolled concurrently in both a Specialist course and a Practitioner program. The Specialist courses currently provided through the Institute are listed below.

Private Assessments

Students with injuries or medical conditions can attend a one off private assessment with a teacher of the Institute. Private assessments are currently offered by Senior Teacher, Alan Goode, occasionally in conjunction with the student's usual teacher. Information provided by the student prior to attending is discussed and considered in the context of the student's Yoga practice experience. Asana and sequence modifications are considered and students will be guided to enroll in the most appropriate program.

Remedial Program

The Remedial Program is offered for people with serious medical conditions and injuries.  It is also available for Yoga Mandir students who are pregnant and are experiencing difficulties beyond what is manageable in their normal Practitioner Program, or who have recently given birth.  New mothers may negotiate with Alan to bring their new born babies to Remedial class.

Scoliosis and Yoga

Scoliosis was originally a Greek word meaning curved or bent. Today it is a word used to describe the most common type of spinal curvature. Scoliosis is simply a descriptive term, like headache, and not a precise diagnosis.
When a scoliosis develops the spine bends sideways and rotates along its vertical axis. These changes have cosmetic and physiological effects with long-term consequences which may result in significant health problems with severe curves.

Mother-Baby Yoga

Cultivating friendliness, compassion and joy through Iyengar Yoga.

The first two years of a new born’s life is full of change and exploration and this period is often the busiest for new parents. Our Mother-Baby class lets mothers bring their babies with them while they practice together. These classes offer relief from the physical demands of motherhood and are a lovely way to be with other mothers and their babies.
